Awareness Protects You: Your first line of defence. Most people think of kicks to the groin and blocking punches when they hear the term “self-defence.” However, true self-defence begins long before any actual physical contact. The first, and probably most important, component in self-defence is awareness: awareness of yourself, your surroundings, and your potential attacker’s likely strategies.
I LOVE THIS! This is the reason I started 4thegirls, because one does not have to be Wonder Women to defend herself she just needs to be AWARE of what could happen.

You can avoid becoming a victim by avoiding places and situations where an attack may be more likely to occur. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as well as walking through alleys and poorly lit areas. If you have to go out at night, bring a companion, talk on your cell phone while walking, drive on well-traveled routes and park under lights. But sometimes you unknowingly enter a dangerous situation or despite your avoidance efforts, you become threatened anyway. Knowing some fighting techniques can protect you from attack or minimize injury.

Attack When You’re Being Attacked

Your instincts are made to protect you. There is one instinct though that will most likely lead to your destruction when your attacker is near you: running away. Sure running away helps, but only when your attacker is a good distance away. Rather than retreating, advance. In a typical scenario where your attacker is the one who feels he is the predator and you’re the prey, he doesn’t expect you to fight back at all. If you react quick enough, you’ll be able to surprise him and open up opportunities to deliver damage.

Don’t be afraid to ask for an escort to your car no matter the time of day. Many retail operations still offer the service, if not find a security guard for the mall to do it.

Try Anything and Everything. Additional approaches are offering your wallet, jumping out at a stoplight, doing something to cause an accident, or signaling to other drivers. If you are thrown into the trunk of a car, experts advise you to kick out the back tail lights, stick your arm out the hole, and start waving wildly. The driver won’t see you but everyone else will. This trick is said to have saved lives.
